Five years ago, on July 4th, I became a mother to a beautiful, vibrant and zealous girl. When I became a mother, everything in life changed, including how I did my job.
Before, work was something I enjoyed and was something required to sustain myself. After having a baby, work became providing for my daughter. I also wanted to show her she was capable of success, however she defines it when that time comes.
And work became me leaving a legacy for her. I want her to be proud of me, and of what I provide for her by doing what I am passionate about.
In many ways, as I describe my daughter, I am also describing myself. As I watch her grow into a little lady, I see my type A personality come through. She loves rules and making sure we are not late for events. She is very good at keeping her brothers on the straight and narrow path, having them follow her rules. She is the first one there if someone is hurt and will lovingly make sure that I am okay if I seem sad. Yes, my daughter is exactly like me – and as strange as that seems to say, that is a good thing!
Above all, when I became a mother, I took ownership of a little spitfire who is amazingly compassionate and I cannot believe I get to be her mum.
