Heritage: something that comes or belongs to one by reason of birth; an inherited lot or portion.
Legacy: anything handed down from the past, as from an ancestor or predecessor.
Ever since my family and I moved from Hawaii to Wisconsin a few months ago, these two words, heritage and legacy, have burned themselves onto my brain and my heart. The name of my business, Legacy Creative Company did not come out of nowhere. My deep purpose is to allow others the room, ability and permission to dream and follow through with their dream. I am sure that is on the heart of others too. I want what I do in the business world to make a difference by not just selling things but to make people’s dreams come alive.
We have gotten so used to shoving our dreams aside for what is practical. I want to allow others to carry out their dreams which will leave a legacy for not only them, but also for myself. As an entrepreneur, there are so many choices that equal leaving a legacy. If my decisions to be fair and upstanding are what I am remembered for, when I move on from the business world, I will be happy with my legacy. How do you want what you have built to be passed down and stand out?
In my family heritage, because we moved back to my hometown, everything is familiar to me – my parents’ house, my riverfront, my eighteen years of living here. From these things I have gained knowledge on how to love unconditionally from my parents 30-year marriage, from my riverfront I have experienced joy and relaxation, a place where the town comes to be together, from my eighteen years of memories in this town are so many life lessons I want to teach to my kids, like being honest, standing up for what is right in the face of adversity and being yourself, even if you are not popular.
My husband’s family was one of the founding families in Hastings, Minnesota, 45 minutes away from where we are living. My kid’s great, great, great grandparents’ house still stands. His family worked hard to make a living and sustain a life in an area that was just developing. That is deeply rooted heritage. Even if my family does not live here permanently, my kids will learn about their family’s heritage and legacy. I believe it is important to pass down your heritage, morals and values to those who carry on after you, both in business and family.
This legacy I am building is mine. I want my creation to be a lasting legacy built on deeply seeded dreams carried on to the next generation. That is what I want to pass down to others.
