Today we were at the Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center in Honolulu. The Discovery Center was a great rainy day activity. They had a touch and feel display on the human body, a town and an area on the origins of Hawaii. While we were there my daughter took a trip to the “town mini market” in the cute town square they built inside the Center. I watched in amusement as she filled her shopping cart. In went the corn on the cob, eggplant, lettuce and other fruits and vegetables. Also in her cart was a fish, a carton of orange juice and ice cream (she’s defiantly my daughter). I have to tell you, I was amazed. Here is this little girl who could have loaded up her cart full of boxes of candy and cookies and cake, which were sitting there, but she didn’t. She might or might not even know what they are since we buy gluten free cookies. I did a little happy dance in my heart.
Four years ago at the beginning of my pregnancy with my daughter, Quianna, I made choices about how I wanted to raise my kids. I vowed to have happy, healthy children with good eating habits. This is why I was so happy and proud of my daughter when she picked healthy choices in the pretend store. When you are raising kids, you hope what you are teaching sticks. We eat fairly healthy at home, although she does know what Panda Express Restaurant is and what she likes to eat when we go there. And she still snubs her nose at perfectly good steak but I think it is plain to say; obviously my husband and I are doing something right in how we are feeding our babies! I cannot say that I have a magic potion for getting kids to eat healthy, but having your kids eat healthy from the beginning is a great start! Yay for happy, healthy kids.
